With its location at 36 Maplewood Avenue, the Cooperative Venture Workspace is part of a vibrant downtown Portsmouth, N.H.

The city is abuzz with the regular pace of work … and play. Often there are special events that heighten the buzz.

Sometimes those special events occur right here at the Workspace. Other times, those events occur outside our four walls.

One such upcoming event is the New Hampshire Film Festival on Oct. 13 to 16 at a variety of downtown locations.

Similar to the Telluride by the Sea film festival held at the Music Hall in September, this festival offers opportunities to see movies and documentaries before they hit the big screens anywhere else in the country.

Venues for the films are the Music Hall, the festival’s main stage theater, the nearby Music Hall Loft, the Moffatt Ladd House, and 3S Artspace.

There are a variety of passes now available for purchase – from the VIP pass, which grants you preferred access to movie seating and to special events throughout the weekend, to individual day passes. Tickets can be purchased here.

Some advice from those of us at the Workshop who have attended the festivals in the past:

 Wear walking shoes, and comfortable layered clothing. There’s a lot of walking. Temperatures in October can vary from mid-morning to mid-day;

 It gets crowded downtown, so that means parking can be tricky. Click here for a festival provided guide to downtown parking;

 Not only does parking get crowded, so do restaurants. If you’re hanging around for the evening’s doings, make a reservation … and soon;

 Have a plan by having an idea of what movies you want to see, where they are, and what time they start. You can’t be everywhere at once, so you’ll have to prioritize what films you’ll want to see. Get started by downloading the schedule here;

 Have fun. We’ll see you around town that weekend.
